Supplier Spotlight with.....By Word of Mouth At Home

When it comes to creating delicious mouth watering dishes, the chef's at By Word of Mouth, a family-run specialist event catering company, have years of experience. With an impressive 35-year history, the London based caterers have worked on an array of glittering events both at home and abroad. But like many businesses in the events arena, the company has felt the effects of lockdown and has had to think outside the box. In the first of our Supplier Spotlight series, Ed Holdcroft, Senior Event Planner at By Word of Mouth, talks to us about how they pivoted their business to create By Word of Mouth at Home, a fabulous range of frozen dishes for all the family.

Interview with Ed Holdcroft, Senior Event Planner:

Tell us a bit more about By Word of Mouth and what you do as a company? We are a specialist event catering company and were founded more than 35 years ago. We are based in South West London and predominantly work throughout London but we have been known to travel the world.  From the tiniest boutique in Bond Street to a marquee 1800m above sea level in the snowy Alps, as well as private homes and corporate venues, we have done it all! Despite working on some of the most spectacular events, we pride ourselves on a highly personal approach as well as obviously superb food.

How did By Word of Mouth pivot the business when lockdown happened and what challenges did you face? When lockdown happened the event world was put on pause and we found ourselves with the opportunity to harness our collective skills and create a new, pivotal business, By Word of Mouth At Home, offering a range of premium quality, chef-made frozen dishes. In the same way that By Word of Mouth transformed event catering over 30 years ago, we aimed to bring a fresh approach to the frozen ready-meal market by offering convenience without compromising on quality. There have been many challenges creating this new side of the business particular during a global pandemic however it has been something all involved have enjoyed sticking their teeth into.

What makes your range standout from the rest? Our team has a wealth of experience and culinary talent and it was of huge importance when developing this range that the values and quality on which our renowned catering enterprise is known for, should also be at the heart of our new business. Our Executive Head Chef, Mark Connolly and Executive Pastry Chef, Martin Stone - who has a Michelin star background - have worked hard with their teams to bring a range of main dishes, sides, puddings and kid’s dishes that include the finest ingredients and offer exceptional flavours without any compromises.

We have also made sure that it isn’t just the food that is top class but every element, from the stylish packaging to the efficiency of our customer services and delivery teams, have been designed with quality and excellence in mind and I think it is this commitment to all these areas that sets us apart from the competition.

Who is your By Word of Mouth at Home range aimed at and what sort of dishes do you offer? Our dishes are designed to have a broad appeal and, especially with our kid’s range, are the perfect option for busy families. The aim was to create home cooked meals that didn’t require any of the hard work for our customers, while not compromising on flavour and quality. We have really focused on little touches that have ensured extra finesse, such as slow cooking our Shin of Beef Cottage Pie in London Pride ale to add depth of flavour or adding truffle and trompette mushrooms to our Mac and Cheese to make it that extra special. When it comes to our kid’s dishes, we have tried to think of everything to make sure meal times are as stress free as possible, by packing them full of hidden vegetables so there isn’t the usual struggle to get them to eat their five a day.

What is your favourite dish in the range and why?

There are so many favourites it is hard to choose. The Aubergine Parmigiana is definitely a go-to either on its own or an accompanying side however the Beef & Guinness Stew with a side of Dauphinois Potatoes is the perfect homely and warming dish for a cold winters evening.

What are your hopes for the future of By Word of Mouth at Home and is this something that you will be continuing with even after the events start up again?

By Word of Mouth At Home is very much something which we are looking to continue growing and to operate alongside our traditional events business. We are currently developing new dishes to increase our range which we will be launching in the new year alongside some options for larger portion sizes. In addition to this we are looking to partner with further retailers and bring By Word of Mouth At Home to even more people.
